Program Description

The Music Department offers a two-year program of music education for students planning to major in music at a four-year institution, as well as the student who is interested in improving their individual musical knowledge and abilities.

Departmental offerings include music theory, conducting, MIDI technology (computer/synthesizer), songwriting, music history and music appreciation. The Department also offers opportunities to develop individual music skills in a variety of instruments, piano and voice, as well as performing experience in auditioned and non-auditioned ensembles. The Music Department faculty supports high standards in music education; they encourage and mentor individual students to attain their highest potential.

Career Opportunities

Continuation to baccalaureate granting institutions in performance and music education. Students may also open studios in private music teaching and approach local recording studios for recording work. Performers may also engage in performance for pay as an entrepreneur in the music field. Most performing musicians do not hold regular jobs as performers but work as contract entrepreneurs in the communities.

Program Entry Requirements

By audition or faculty approval.  Students with insufficient prior preparation may be required to take MUSC 1100 - Introduction to Music Theory  before being allowed to begin taking the required courses in Music Theory.  Students entering the program should complete a music theory entrance exam for placement in the proper music theory course.  Contact the South City Campus Testing Center by calling 801-957-3267 to schedule an appointment to take the music theory entrance exam prior to beginning your first semester.  New students should also audition for placement in a performance ensemble.  Contact either the director of the ensemble you would like to audition for or contact the division office by calling 801-957-3099 to be directed to the appropriate faculty member to schedule your audition.
