Program Description
The Chemistry Department offers a program leading to an Associate of Science degree. Required courses and laboratory instruction in this program provides the student the first two years of chemistry and related courses required for admission to baccalaureate major programs. Program also provides a solid foundation in chemistry necessary for admission to professional programs and for employment in chemistry-related areas.

Chemistry is also a discipline essential to training for many pre-professional fields as well as health sciences. All classes are transferable to other schools in the state system of higher education and most other universities and colleges.

Chemistry classes are offered at four levels:

  1. General one-semester survey class; fulfills General Education requirements for non-technical students;
  2. A two-semester health science series of inorganic, organic and biochemistry;
  3. A two-semester series of pre-engineering/pre-professional general inorganic chemistry;
  4. A two-semester series of organic chemistry.

Transfer/Articulation Information
Please refer to the Student Resources section of the SLCC University Transfer webpage.

Admission into a major program at a transfer institution depends upon the receiving institution’s requirements for that major.  Some major programs are restricted and require special application as well as a competetive GPA.  See an Academic Advisor at both SLCC and the intended receiving insittution for specific articulation information.

Estimated Cost for Students

General Education Requirements

Complete all General Education courses. Refer to Notes for program specific requirements and recommendations.

 .

Program General Education Notes

REQUIRED:

Written Communication (WC): ENGL 1010 - Introduction to College Writing (WC)  and ENGL 2100 - Technical Writing (WC)

Quantitative Literacy (QL): MATH 1210 - Calculus I (QL)

Note: The Physical Science (PS) Breadth Area is satisfied by virtue of program coursework.

Program Requirements

Program Electives (Minimum 1 credit)

Complete at least 1 credit hour from the following list of elective courses.  Elective courses should be determined with the assistance of an Academic Advisor and should take into account the student’s level of preparation and the benefit the course provides toward a Bachelor’s Degree upon transfer.

Time to Completion & Graduation Map

  • Chemistry AS: Full-time
  • If students follow the suggested semester schedule, time to completion is four semesters.

Program Learning Outcomes

Program learning outcome alignment with Institution Learning Outcomes   in brackets.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic chemical concepts surrounding matter and energy and proficiency in core laboratory skills. [1]
  • Communicate chemistry concepts effectively with the use of IUPAC nomenclature, multiple representative models for atomic and molecular structures, adherence to laboratory instructions, and reporting of laboratory observations and results. [2]
  • Demonstrate quantitative literacy by applying scientific notation, metric prefixes, and dimensional analysis, solving chemical property equations, and interpreting scientific data. [3,9]
  • Analyze, evaluate, and predict information about molecular structures, reactions, and spectroscopic data; including physical and chemical properties, reaction conditions, and chemical identification. [4,9]
  • Identify and comply with proper waste disposal steps for different forms of chemical waste destined for disparate waste streams. [6,8]
  • Identify chemical hazards associated with chemicals they are handling and comply with proper safety precautions while working in the lab. [7,8]
