Program Description: Students with an aptitude in creative problem solving, drawing, design, photography and/or computer related visual communication should consider this rapidly expanding and competitive field. The Visual Art & Design Department allows students to specialize in the following areas: Animation, Graphic Design, Illustration, Multimedia, Photography, Web Design, and Graphic Communications Technologies.

Photography is widely used in visual art and design, including fine art. Students who elect to pursue the AAS Degree in Visual Art & Design’s Photography Emphasis will become acquainted with, and gain competencies in, all aspects of the photographic arts. Competencies will include: film and digital camera operation, studio and existing lighting control, working in both digital and film environments to produce color and black and white imagery. This prepares students to work as freelance photographers or continue their education for an advanced degree. Students will learn various visual art business practices and they will prepare a professional portfolio. The final and exit portfolio is a required component of the Photography Program and is designed to obtain an entry-level job within one of the many photography related career paths.

The photography emphasis student must have access to fully adjustable camera equipment (digital SLR) and additional equipment and supplies as required for this program and its various courses.

Career Opportunities: Photographers provide traditionally and digitally produced images appropriate for use in advertising and design applications including; web, stock, commercial, and editorial photography. Photographers also work as portrait, documentary and fine art photographers. Students who follow this track will earn an AAS Degree in Visual Art & Design/Photography Emphasis. Professional photography positions such as freelance photographer, portrait photographer, fine art photographer, commercial photographer, photographic assistant, digital lab tech / lab aid, photographic representative and sales person will be attainable by the student.

Transfer/Articulation Information: This AAS Degree is currently not transferable to four year institutions; however, some of the General Education components are transferable. The Visual Art & Design Department is committed to general and preprofessional programs and some credit may be granted by receiving institutions on a per case basis. Students desiring to transfer to a four-year institution in Photography should contact Asst. Professor Terry Martin, terry.martin@slcc.edu.

Program Entry Requirements: All students interested in majoring in photography must have their own 35mm, digital SLR camera and/or medium format camera with full manual capabilities. All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better to continue in the program.

Total Program/Course Fees: $225-$265 in class/lab fees.

Estimated Cost for Students: $1,000 over the two-year period. This is an estimate for the specific photographic supplies that students will need to purchase in order to complete the assignments and outlined objectives. This amount does not include a camera.

Estimated Time to Completion: If students follow Recommended Sequence, completion time is four semesters.
