Accreditation

Salt Lake Community College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Accreditation of an institution of higher education by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality evaluated through a peer review process. An accredited college or university is one which has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is substantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Institutional integrity is also addressed through accreditation.

Accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities in not partial but applies to the institution as a whole. As such, it is not a guarantee of every course or program offered, or the competence of individual graduates. Rather, it provides reasonable assurance about the quality of opportunities available to students who attend the institution.

College Overview

Salt Lake Community College is an accredited, multi-campus college serving the diverse needs of the Salt Lake County community. With an open-door enrollment policy, the College serves more than 60,000 students through credit and non-credit courses and workshops each year. It is the eighth most prolific producer of Associate’s degrees in the country.

To accommodate student needs, SLCC has multiple site, plus SLCC Online, that allows students to take classes virtually anywhere. Courses are offered in both traditional and accelerated semesters, during the day, at night, and on weekends. Students receive personal attention from faculty as the College maintains an average student-to-faculty ratio of 20 to 1.

The College has established active partnerships with more than 500 local businesses and school districts to provide skills training, professional development, and academic programs to current and future employees. SLCC plays a key role in building Utah’s economy by anticipating future needs and preparing a skilled workforce able to manage ever-changing technologies.

Students also benefit from distance learning. SLCC offers a broad range of courses via distance learning formats, with almost half of these distance-delivered sections being taught completely online. More than 15 percent of SLCC course sections are online classes and more than 7,000 SLCC students take at least one online course each semester.

Salt Lake Community College has initiated and developed an education/business partnership that provides a two-year scholarship to students and work opportunities for students. Called the “PACE,” (Partnerships for Accessing College Education) program, this unique partnership between local secondary school systems, local businesses, and the College is an incentive program that provides high school students with opportunities for employment during summer recesses and potential internships during their academic years. High school students involved in the program who complete the PACE criteria and graduate in eight consecutive academic terms will receive full two-year academic scholarships to attend Salt Lake Community College.

The Center for New Media will soon open its doors at the South City Campus. In partnership with Salt Lake School District’s Career and Technical Education, this innovative building will accommodate more than 7,000 students-including nearly 2,000 Applied Technology students.

The Instructional and Administration Building is also currently under construction at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. The majority of the space in this building-75,000 of its 136,000 total square feet-will be devoted to instruction. The flexible and dynamic student spaces in this facility will foster interdisciplinary learning. Once completed, the Instructional and Administrative Building will replace the current Administration Building and allow the College to adhere to the seismic and safety standards that are part of the College’s overall facilities master plan.

Salt Lake Community College is one of this state’s most important engines for driving the economy. Higher earnings of SLCC students and associated increases in state income expand Utah’s tax base by $153.7 million dollars annually. Higher tax receipts and avoided governmental costs result in a cumulative value of $171.2 million in benefits over the course of students’ working careers. Skills acquired by SLCC students translate to higher earnings for students and increased output of businesses; added income attributable to the accumulation of SLCC credits in the workforce amounts to $840 million annually.
