Program Description: Machining CNC/CAM Technology - trained machinists are continuously needed in engineering, manufacturing and fabrication companies and there are not enough new workers available to fill the entry-level positions. This 30-week, 31-credit hour curriculum provides students with the manual and CNC skills required for work as an entry-level machinist, equivalent to 6 months of on-the-job training. The two-semester certificate of completion in machining technology provides the student with the entry-level skills required for work as a machinist in industry and includes: manual and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining, CAD (Computer Assisted Design), CAM (Computer Assisted Manufacturing), Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and manufacturing processes.

Career Opportunities: Entry-level wages for machinists start between $10 and $12 per hour and a machinist with two to five years of work experience will earn between $28,000 and $50,000 per year.

Estimated Time to Completion: If students follow the sample schedule, time to completion is two semesters.

Machining and CNC Skills
1. Students will:
  • demonstrate knowledge of safety rules and identify the various machining processes and equipment.
  • produce precision parts to design specification and demonstrate the ability to use precision measuring equipment.
  • demonstrate competency in the operation of lathes, grinders and mills (MCCT 1500 , MCCT 1510 ).

2. Students will:
  • produce CNC code and select the proper machining process by programming and building projects on CNC mills and lathes
  • demonstrate understanding of tolerance limits for each machining process and verify that projects meet blueprint requirements (MCCT 1600 ,MCCT 1610 ).

Related Cad and Design Knowledge and Skills
3. Students will:
  • produce drawings that demonstrate competency in AutoCAD and are neat and professional
  • demonstrate proficiency with drawing and screen setup: layouts, layers, dimension styles, scale factors, blocks, profiles, and plotting
  • demonstrate knowledge of CAD commands and use them appropriately for efficiency and accuracy (EDDT 1040 ).

4. Students will:
  • demonstrate knowledge of solid modeling tools, creating and defining sketches, 3D features, mating assemblies, design tables, and fabrication and assembly drawings from models.
  • produce accurate parts, assemblies, and drawings per industry standard.
  • demonstrate the ability to analyze design intent and process (EDDT 2600 ).

5. Students will:
  • demonstrate knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing symbols and applications of form, function, and tolerances.
  • produce drawings with correctly applied symbols.
  • demonstrate understanding of the use of GD&T in automated manufacturing and quality inspection (EDDT 2540 ).

6.Students will:
  • demonstrate knowledge of industrial materials and processes and the principles of material behavior.
  • demonstrate ability to apply this knowledge in hands-on lab experience with molding, casting and forming.
  • participate as a member of a design team to create designs and finished products (EDDT 2340 , EDDT 2350 ).

General Education Requirements


Note:


MATH 1010  is a prerequisite for the math courses required in the AS degree for students who may want to continue.

Note:


COMM 2110  will also meet the Interdisciplinary (ID)  requirement for students who may want to continue toward as AS transfer degree studying Manufacturing Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technology.

It is the student’s responsibility to examine each course description for details of prerequisite classes or preparation. Those prerequisites must be satisfied before the designated class may be taken and may require extra time to complete the program. Students should check the semester class schedule for the day/evening availability and modifications caused by varying enrollment.

Students acquiring an Associate of Science Degree with a pre-major in General Studies may simultaneously earn a Certificate in Machining CNC/CAM Technology by selecting the above courses to fulfill the elective component of the AS degree.

EDDT classes are offered summer term as requested by students. Classes taken summer can reduce the credit hours required in other semesters or shorten the time to acquire the degree.

EDDT evening classes are generally offered on alternating semesters than those listed or in summer term.
