Program Description
The Interior Design program is designed to develop technical skills, creativity, and an understanding of all aspects of Interior Design. The graduates of this program will be qualified by education, experience, and examination to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces for the purpose of improving the quality of life, increasing productivity, and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public. The Interior Design program will prepare the students to:

  • Analyze clients’ needs, goals, and life safety requirements and integrate them into a comprehensive design program.
  • Formulate preliminary design concepts that are aesthetic, appropriate, functional, and in accordance with codes and standards.
  • Develop and present final design recommendations through industry standard presentation media.
  • Prepare working drawings and specifications for non-load bearing interior construction, reflected ceiling plans, lighting, interior detailing, materials, finishes, space planning, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment in compliance with universal accessibility guidelines and all applicable codes.
  • Collaborate with professional services of other licensed practitioners in the technical areas of plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and load-bearing design as required for regulatory approval.
  • Prepare and administer bids and contract documents as the client’s agent.
  • Review and evaluate design solutions during implementation and upon completion.

Projects cover a wide range of interior spaces, including residences, hotels and restaurants, stores, historic settings, and supportive housing.

This AAS degree also provides educational credits needed to qualify for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam (NCIDQ).

This program can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.

Career Opportunities
Graduates of this program will have the skill and knowledge to work as:

  • Design assistants for independent designer or Design firms (residential & commercial)
  • Drafts-persons in architectural firms

  • Freelance Designers
  • Sales/ Design in any interior related industries e.g. lighting, furniture, flooring, window treatments, cabinetry, etc.

  • Manufacturing Representatives

Transfer/Articulation Information
This AAS Degree is currently not directly transferable to four-year institutions; however, some of the General Education components are transferable. In addition, 7 courses directly transfer to Weber State University’s Interior Design BS Program (see the requirements for the Certificate of Proficiency in Interior Design). The Interior Design Program is committed to general and pre-professional programs and some credit may be granted by receiving institutions on a per case basis (See Utah System of Higher Education Institutions).

Estimated Time to Completion
Time to completion is 5 semesters based on a full-time minimum of 15 credits per semester. Less than 15 credits per semester will increase time to completion.

NOTE

INTD 1010 * is a Fine Art General Education course. Courses that meet General Education requirements may be used to meet program requirements. If this option is chosen, student must complete additional elective courses in Interior Design to meet the total credit hour requirement. Please meet with an academic advisor to discuss options.

Students who need to take preparatory classes to meet the requirements of first semester courses should plan on extra time to complete the program. It is the student’s responsibility to examine each course description for details of prerequisite classes. Those prerequisites must be satisfied before class may be taken.
