Program Faculty:
Generally, Apprenticeship faculty members are chosen from journeymen who are working in the field with a minimum of six years’ experience. All instructors are hired as adjunct on a semester-by-semester basis.

Program Description: The Cement Mason JATC Technology Curriculum is industry specific and is offered on as an as-needed basis. Please consult the semester class schedule for the courses being offered or contact the Apprenticeship Office for class availability.

Cement Masons build walls, arches, columns, floors and other structures using concrete. The work is typically outdoors and must meet rigid specifications. To sit for the journeyman exam, an apprentice must complete 432 minimum hours of related instruction and three years and 6,000  hours of on-the-job training (OJT). It is strongly encouraged that students be registered with the Bureau of Apprenticeship an Training, which is optional at the discretion of the employer. This curriculum has been articulated statewide.

The College provides classroom-related and supplemental instruction for apprenticeship programs. Classes are held in the days, evenings, and Saturdays, depending on the program. The College neither provides on-the-job training nor acts as a sponsor for apprentices. Individuals must locate their own sponsors. For individual industry-sponsored programs, students should contact their employers’ training director or the Apprenticeship Office.

The Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship is the federal registering agency for all Utah programs. For National credentials, students and sponsors need to be registered with the Federal Office of Apprenticeship, 125 South State Street, Suite 2412, Salt Lake City, UT 84138. Sponsors are encouraged to be registered with the Office of Apprenticeship.

Career Opportunities: Apprenticeship students are expected to be employed while participating in related training course work.

Program Entry Requirements: There are no prerequisites to enter this program other than approval by the JATC.

Note: Apprenticeship programs are not eligible for financial aid.

Estimated Time to Completion: Apprenticeship programs are composed of two parts: (1) on-the-job training is provided by a sponsor who exposes the apprentice to practical applications in all phases of a particular craft; (2) classroom-related instruction is designed to provide the apprentice with knowledge of theoretical and technical aspects of their craft. Total completion of an apprenticeship program will take up to five years, depending upon the craft.

Advising Notes:

The classes listed are sequential and are to be taken in order. All major CMA course requirements must be taken to complete the apprenticeship curriculum. The courses are only offered once each year with odd number courses in the fall semester and even number courses in the spring semester. The math prerequisite does not fulfill any of the apprenticeship hours required. A student must pass each course with a C or higher to move onto the next level class. Failure to complete the necessary course work or to register in a timely manner for each class will add one full year to the apprentice’s program.

Apprentices earn a certificate of achievement upon successful completion of all major CMA course requirements.

It is the students’ responsibility to understand the requirements for their chosen program of study and to examine each course description for details about the prerequisite classes. It is highly recommended that each student meet with the Apprenticeship program advisor prior to starting this program. The program advisor may be reached at (801) 957-4550.

Additional Program Note:

A Certificate in Cement Mason JATC Technology is also available. For more information about this certificate, contact the Apprenticeship Office, Taylorsville Redwood Campus, CT 274, (801) 957-4066.
