Special Function Officer: Technical Certificate

Program Description
The Special Function Officer program provides the required basic training necessary before students can advance into training as a corrections or law enforcement officer in the State of Utah. The program provides an excellent initial approach to a law enforcement or corrections career. In this course, students will study the core legal, behavioral health, defensive tactics, patrol, criminal investigation procedures, arrest control techniques, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid.
 
Career Opportunities
Persons certified as a special funtion officer are qualified to work in county jails, courthouses and private security positions. This certificate also qualifies them to enter a Law Enforcment Officer academy or a Basic Corrections Officer program. 
 
Gainful Employment
Lightcast reports there are currently 4,147 jobs in the Salt Lake County area which is below the national average but by 2030 there is projected to be an 11.3% increase in local numbers. 84% of those jobs are with state and local governments.  Current compensation is higher than the national average at $35.84 per hour.
