Program Description

The Emergency Medical Technician program provides training for out-of-hospital emergency medical care and transportation of critical and emergent patients who access The emergency medical services (EMS) system. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) have basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport
patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life-threatening emergencies. EMTs function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight. EMTs perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. EMTs are a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system.

Career Opportunities
Emergency Medical Technician certificates are required to work on an ambulance or to become a firefighter, a paramedic, or an Advanced Medical Technician. The knowledge and skills are also applicable to nursing, physical therapy, law enforcement, and private security..

Gainful Employment

Lightcast reports that there are currently 622 EMT jobs open, which is below the national average for an area of this size. This is an entry-level certification that leads to other careers with a higher current demand regionally. The forecast for the next five years indicates a 12.3% increase in jobs, which is above the national average of 9.6%.  Current compensation is, on average, $37,383 annually in the Salt Lake/Murray area.

Specialized Program Accreditation

This program meets the requirements of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and the Utah Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
