Program Description:
This course is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to meet the State of Utah nursing assistant certification requirements. Students completing the program will learn the responsibilities of a certified nursing assistant and health unit clerk to provide for the physical, physiological, and psychological needs of the patient within a hospital or long-term care facility. The student will gain the   ability to give holistic, compassionate, and respectful care. The curriculum includes an overall introduction to human relations, communication, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. It provides the opportunity to develop clinical competency in the performance of nurse assisting skills and procedures through participation in the care of patients in a clinical setting. 

Career Opportunities:
Upon program completion, the student will become eligible to be certified and licensed as a CNA and will be able to obtain employment in the health care field as a CNA. The student will also satisfy the pre-requisite of completing a CNA program prior to applying for a Nursing program.

Transfer/Articulation Information:
The CNA program articulates with the requirements of Salt Lake Community College, the University of Utah, Weber State University, BYU, Westminster and Davis Applied Technology Center pre-requisites for enrollment in their nursing degree programs.

Program Entry Requirements:
Students must demonstrate basic education skills as assessed by the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE):

• Reading 9.0
• Math 6.0

Student must have a current CPR card or take KCNA 0010 - CPR Health Care Professionals  (a 4 hour course costing an estimated $29.00 while in the program).

Immunizations:

• Hepatitis B Series (1st shot required)
• MMR or Titer
• PPD - Tuberculosis (TB) Manitou Test or Chest X-ray - within one year
• Varicella (Chickenpox), or verification of disease
• TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) - within the past 10 years
• Influenza (October 1 - March 31)

Other Entry Requirements:

• 17 years old at enrollment, students should be 18 years old upon completion; the majority of health care facilities hiring CNAs require their employees to be 18 years old upon hire.
• Utah Bureau of Criminal Investigations personal criminal background check (BCI) within the past 6 months.
• Drug Screen (SAM-5) prior to enrollment and within the past 30 days.
• Ability to lift and/or move patients.
• Not listed on the sex offender web site.
