Program Description

This program prepares students at Salt Lake Community College interested in outdoor adventure parks and recreation (OAPR) professions and bachelor’s degree options. OAPR is an academic discipline focusing on the theories, concepts, and best practices that drive participation and programs within recreation and leisure activities. Students learn about the social psychology behind recreation participation and effective programming and how to design, create, and evaluate recreation-based programs. Through internship experiences, students gain important professional experience and make connections within the OAPR industry.

Upon finishing the requirements for an AS degree in outdoor adventure parks and recreation and after acceptance into a major program, a student should be able to obtain a bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution with two additional years of study. The program also prepares students for entry-level positions within Utah’s $12 Billion parks, recreation, and tourism economy.

Career Opportunities

Utah’s outdoor recreation and tourism economy is the seventh largest industry within Utah, accounting for more than $12 Billion in annual revenue (Ken C. Gardener Policy Institute, 2024). Over 100,000 Utah jobs are directly related to the OAPR industry, accounting for approximately 8-10% of employment within the state. Utah is a unique state with an abundance of public land, a robust ski industry, and numerous outdoor recreation-focused companies and nonprofit organizations.

The park and recreation profession offers diverse job opportunities throughout the country. Whether working in an office or out in the field, a career in parks and recreation means enhancing the quality of life for all people through advancing environmental conservation efforts, social equity, and health and wellness.  (https://www.nrpa.org/careers-education/careers/choosing-a-career-in-parks-and-recreation/).

Completing the associate degree, transferring, and completing the bachelor’s degree is the typical entry path for the parks and recreation career path. Career paths include working for the Division of Wildlife Services, parks and recreation agency director, recreation director, park operations director, facility manager, athletics supervisor, aquatics supervisor, recreation program coordinator, outdoor adventure guide or educator, ski resort operations and management, and others.
