Program Description
The General Studies Associate of Science degree is SLCC’s most flexible transfer program and is designed for students who either have not decided upon a major or need to customize their courses for transfer to a specific baccalaureate degree program. Students who have not yet chosen a major are encouraged to explore their interests by selecting courses from a variety of disciplines. Students who have identified a future major may select classes that satisfy specific prerequisite and pre-major requirements for their intended baccalaureate degree. Since different universities have different degree requirements, students are encouraged to select appropriate courses that will satisfy requirements at their anticipated transfer institution.

The General Studies Associate of Science degree requires a minimum of 60 semester hours of transferable credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 or better (2.5 or better is recommended).

Program General Education Note

  • Quantitative Literacy (QL)

MATH 1030 , a broad survey of mathematics topics, is required for all General Studies students. Students who plan to transfer to a baccalaureate program requiring a different math course should select the appropriate SLCC program of study instead of General Studies. Usually MATH 1050  (prerequisite MATH 1010 ) is appropriate for students intending to major in physical, computational and biological sciences, engineering and other applied science fields; MATH 1040  (prerequisites ENGL 0900  with C grade or better and MATH 0990  within last year with C grade or better, or appropriate placement scores)) is appropriate for students intending to major in social and behavioral sciences, humanities and the health sciences; and MATH 1090  (prerequisite MATH 1010 ) is appropriate for students intending to major in Business.

  • Courses that meet General Education requirements may be used to meet program requirements unless specified by the program. If this option is chosen, students must complete additional program elective courses to meet the total credit hour requirement.
