Program Description
Low voltage (LV) electrical systems field specialization includes video and audio media, life safety (access control, burglar and fire alarms, and video surveillance), communications (telephone, modem computer networks, paging), and environmental controls (HVAC and energy management). Apprentices will ‘learn and earn’ while developing critical industry skills and achieving industry certifications.

Career Opportunities
Apprenticeship students must be employed while participating in related training coursework.

Low voltage technicians install electrical systems, fire alarms, surveillance equipment, security systems, and audiovisual or multimedia equipment. The industry constantly seeks employees interested in technology and keeping up with industry changes.

The program prepares students for the following careers:

  • Job title 1: Low voltage technicians
  • Job title 2: Audiovisual equipment installers and repairers
  • Job title 3: Security installers
  • Job title 4: Telecommunication line installers and repairers
  • Job title 5: HVAC controls technician or controls installer
  • Job title 6: Fire alarm installer
  • Job title 7: Alarm technician

Program Entry Requirements
All entering students must demonstrate competence for placement into MATH 1010 , or provide a transcript showing a grade of C or higher in MATH 0990  or equivalent, or complete ELI 1470  (Math for the Trades) with a grade of C or higher.

  • Apprenticeship Low Voltage Technician CP: Part-time  
  • This two-year apprenticeship program spans five consecutive semesters. It is composed of two parts: (1) paid, on-the-job training provided by a sponsor (employer) who exposes the apprentice to practical applications in all phases of the trade; (2) classroom-related instruction designed to provide the apprentice with knowledge of theoretical and technical aspects of the trade.

  • Demonstrate the proper handling and safety of tools and equipment associated with basic wood, masonry, concrete, and steel construction methods. [1,4,7]
  • Obtain industry certifications including OSHA, BICSI, AVIXA (CTS), and Utah Fire Alarm Systems. [1,4]
  • Interpret low voltage electronic systems drawings, riser diagrams, hardware and equipment schedules, and specifications. [1,4,7]
  • Install, diagnose, and program audio/video, communication, fire alarm, security, networking, and access control systems in residential and commercial dwellings. [1,4,7]
  • Perform low voltage operations, including installations and troubleshooting, using job-specific test equipment. [1,4,7]
