Program Faculty
Generally, Apprenticeship faculty members are chosen from journeymen who are working in the field with a minimum of six years’ experience. All instructors are hired as adjunct on a semester-by-semester basis.

Program Description
Electricians are compulsory licensed craftsmen who plan, lie out and install, alter or repair electrical wiring, fixtures, apparatus and controls. To sit for the journeyman exam, an apprentice must complete 576 minimum hours of related instruction and four years and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training (OJT). Application with the State of Utah Department of Occupational and Professional Licensing must be made upon commencement of employment. It is strongly encouraged that students be registered with the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, which is optional at the discretion of the employer. This curriculum has been articulated statewide.

The College provides classroom-related and supplemental instruction for apprenticeship programs. Classes are held in the days, evenings, and Saturdays, depending on the program. The College neither provides on-the-job training nor acts as a sponsor for apprentices. Individuals must locate their own sponsors. For individual industry-sponsored programs, students should contact their employers’ training director or the Apprenticeship Office.

The Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship is the federal registering agency for all Utah programs. For National credentials, students and sponsors need to be registered with the Federal Office of Apprenticeship, 125 South State Street, Suite 2412, Salt Lake City, UT 84138. Sponsors are encouraged to be registered with the Office of Apprenticeship. All electricians and plumbers must register with the Utah State Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing, (801) 530- 6628.

Career Opportunities
Apprenticeship students are expected to be employed while participating in related training course work.

Transfer/Articulation Information
Students who earn an AAS degree in Electrical Independent Technology have the option to transfer into the Technology Management Bachelor Degree at Utah Valley University. UVU will accept up to 45 technical credits towards this degree.

Estimated Cost for Students
Tuition per semester: https://www.slcc.edu/student/financial/tuition-fees.aspx
Course fees: $10.00 per semester

Note: Apprenticeship programs are not eligible for financial aid.

Estimated Time to Completion
Apprenticeship programs are composed of two parts: (1) on-the-job training is provided by a sponsor who exposes the apprentice to practical applications in all phases of a particular craft; (2) classroom-related instruction is designed to provide the apprentice with knowledge of theoretical and technical aspects of their craft. Total completion of an apprenticeship program will take up to five years, depending upon the craft.

Program Entry Requirements
All entering students must demonstrate competence for placement into MATH 1010  by scoring 40 or higher on the algebra portion of the mathematics College Placement Test, or provide a transcript showing a grade of C or higher in MATH 0980  or equivalent, or complete ELI 1470 (Math for the Trades)  with a grade of C or higher.

Licensure Information
The Electrical Independent Apprenticeship is designed to prepare students to apply for professional licensure through the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL)

Licensure requirements vary state to state.  In order to work as an Electrician in another state, students must satisfy that state’s licensure requirements.  We recommend that students who are planning to move out of Utah research licensure requirements in other states.  Here is one suggested website: License Finder sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Once a student earns an Electrician license in Utah, the student may be eligible for licensure reciprocity in a few other states.  More information about licensure reciprocity is available at the National Center for Construction Education & Research website.  If you have difficulty finding the licensure requirements for your state, please contact your academic advisor, or SLCC’s state authorization coordinator for help.

Advising Notes

The classes listed are sequential and are to be taken in order. All major ELI course requirements must be taken to complete the apprenticeship curriculum. The courses are only offered once each year with odd number courses in the fall semester and even number courses in the spring semester. The math prerequisite does not fulfill any of the apprenticeship hours required. A student must pass each course with a C+ or higher and pass a competency test to move onto the next level class. Failure to complete the necessary course work or to register in a timely manner for each class will add one full year to the apprentice’s program.

It is the students’ responsibility to understand the requirements for their chosen program of study and to examine each course description for details about the prerequisite classes. It is highly recommended that each student meet with the Apprenticeship Program Advisor prior to starting this program. The Program Advisor may be reached in Academic and Career Advising.

*It is recommended to those students seeking the AAS degree to complete the general education requirements in the summer semesters or the year following completion of all the Apprenticeship core courses. Students seeking the AAS degree must apply and successfully pass their Journeyman’s exam. Once a student has received their Journeyman’s license they must also submit a copy to the Graduation Office with the Graduation Application. The Electrical Independent Technology courses are also available online.

Additional Program Note

A Certificate in Electrical Independent Technology is also available. For more information about this certificate, contact the Apprenticeship Office, Taylorsville Redwood Campus, CT 274, (801) 957-4066.
