Program Description
The Clinical Medical Assisting Program will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to competently perform the duties of a medical assistant as defined by local and national standards, and be prepared to complete a national certification exam.
Medical assistants are trained primarily to work in doctors’ offices and other ambulatory care clinics as an integral member of the allied health care delivery team.
Students will be trained in both the administrative and clinical areas of medical assisting so that they may work to keep the offices and clinics of numerous health professionals running smoothly under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician. The curriculum will allow the students to gain competency in cognitive, psychomotor and affective competencies. The program will be offered in a flexible open entry / open exit format.
Instruction will be achieved in a Competency Based Education format with a combination of online, classroom, laboratory, and clinical activities that will include experience in an ambulatory healthcare facility. Students must demonstrate proficiency by passing all courses and competencies required in the program before being placed in a clinical site for the externship. Students complete a 165 hour unpaid clinical externship at a health care facility contracted with the college. Students are required to provide the externship coordinator evidence of completion of these hours and satisfactory performance signed by the clinical supervisor.
Upon successful completion of the coursework and externship at a satisfactory rate of 80% or better and receipt of all necessary documentation the student will receive the Certificate of Completion.

Gainful Employment
Employment of medical assistants is expected to grow by 29 percent between 2016 and 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. The growth of the aging baby-boom population will continue to increase demand for preventive medical services, which are often provided by physicians. As a result, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients.
