Program Description
Materials science engineering is an interdisciplinary field incorporating concepts in both applied physics and chemistry to engineering applications. Materials engineers study the relationship between the structure of materials at atomic or molecular scales and their macroscopic properties. They are interested in understanding and predicting the properties of metals, ceramics, polymers, composites and semiconductors.

Career Opportunities
Materials science engineers work in a wide range of industries including aerospace, biotechnology, metallurgy, computers and electronics, automotive and transportation firms.

Transfer/Articulation Information
The associate of pre-engineering degree in Materials Science Engineering is a transfer degree similar to the associate of science degree, but has reduced General Education requirements. Engineering students who complete this degree may apply for advanced-placement at an engineering school, but must complete General Education requirements at the senior institution.

Students may wish to complete general education requirements at SLCC in order to reduce their course load during the junior and senior year at the receiving transfer institution. Please consult with the Engineering advisor to plan an appropriate course of study

Admission into an engineering major program at a transfer institution depends upon the receiving institution’s requirements for that major. Some major programs are restricted and require special application as well as a competitive GPA. See an Academic Advisor at both SLCC and the intended receiving institution for specific articulation information. The University of Utah has the only 4 year Materials Science Engineering program in the USHE system, however courses from the SLCC program may transfer to other colleges and universities.

Estimated Cost for Students
Tuition and student fees: http://www.slcc.edu/student/financial/tuition-fees.aspx
Books: $300 to $500/semester. This cost can be minimized by planning ahead to purchase used books or approved back editions.

Estimated Time to Completion
Time to completion is 4 semesters based on a full-time minimum of 17-18 credits per semester. Less than 18 credits per semester will increase time to completion.

Program Entry Requirements
Each program requires as a prerequisite a science-oriented high school curriculum which includes as much mathematics, chemistry, physics and English as possible. Students who do not qualify to enter MATH 1210 , CHEM 1210  and ENGL 1010  should take prerequisite courses before entering the first semester of their program. Students who need to take preparatory courses to meet the requirements of first semester courses should plan on extra time to complete the program. Consult with the academic advisor concerning these courses. It is the student’s responsibility to examine each course description for details of prerequisite courses. Those prerequisites must be satisfied before the designated class may be taken.

Program Student Learning Outcomes Related College-Wide Student Learning Outcomes
  1 - Acquire substantive knowledge
2 - Communicate effectively
3 - Develop quantitative literacies
4 - Think critically and creatively
5 - Develop knowledge and skills to be civically engaged
6 - Develop the knowledge and skills to work with others in a professional and constructive manner

Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of physical science, in particular inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physics.

1

Demonstrate an understanding of the mathematical tools necessary to perform engineering calculations - in particular Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations

1, 3

Demonstrate the laboratory skills necessary to design and perform scientific and engineering experiments, and to be able to interpret collected data.

1, 3, 4

Demonstrate the ability to solve complex problems in engineering and science using critical thinking skills.

1, 4

Effectively communicate scientific and engineering concepts both orally and in writing.

2

General Education Requirements

General Education requirements in this degree are reduced. Students who earn an Associate of Pre-Engineering degree will need to complete additional General Education requirements for a bachelor’s degree at the receiving institution. Transfer students should obtain advising regarding General Education requirements specific to Engineering majors.

Core Skills

Quantitative Literacy (QL) 1 course

American Institutions (AI) 1 course

Distribution Areas

Select 3 credits from the following distribution areas. We recommend the course should also be a Diversity course (DV).

Advising Notes

*We recommend FA 1080  - Basic Metal Sculpture - as a distribution option

**Well prepared students may substitute MATH 1080  for MATH 1050  / MATH 1060  with Math Department approval. Students who need additional math preparation should consult an academic advisor.

Additional Program Notes

Students may wish to complete general education requirements at SLCC in order to reduce their course load during the junior and senior year at the receiving transfer institution.  Please consult with the Engineering advisor to plan an appropriate course of study.
