Program DescriptionThe Education Program is a two-year program designed to prepare students to transfer to an accredited four-year teacher licensure program. Students completing the program will develop skills and receive the academic and hands-on experiences necessary to be accepted into the professional core of courses offered at the university level.

Specific requirements leading to a bachelor’s degree in education differ among the four-year higher education institutions. To tailor a program specific to student needs, students must meet with the Education Academic Advisor prior to registering for courses.

Transfer/Articulation Information
The EDU AS Program provides the first two years of study in early childhood, elementary, secondary, and special education teacher licensure. Currently, there is a shortage of qualified teachers in Utah and in many states across the country.

Transfer/Articulation Information
SLCC’s Education Program faculty meet annually with other USHE elementary education and special education program faculty to discuss teacher licensure course requirements and promote common numbering and content. These majors’ articulation meetings produce seamless articulation and transfer agreements. Secondary education majors’ coursework outside of the education programs are not addressed. Rather, articulation and transfer agreements are part of the secondary teaching area of emphasis (math, English, etc.). SLCC Academic Advisors maintain ongoing contact with other USHE schools to maintain effective transfer and articulation on behalf of students.

Students should select electives based on the institution to which they intend to transfer. Electives may be selected with approval from the EDU Academic Advisor or the EDU Associate Dean. Students should consult with the Education Academic Advisor to ensure that the correct classes are taken for transferability to their school of choice. Guidelines (advising forms) for transfer to other Education programs in Utah are available from the EDU Academic Advisor.  Please note that the Education electives are subject to change, so it is important that all students meet with an Advisor before enrolling for classes. Students are also advised to contact the Education Advisor at the school(s) to which they intend to transfer for the most current information.

Estimated Cost for Students
Tuition and student fees: http://www.slcc.edu/student/financial/tuition-fees.aspx
Books: An average of $120.00 per course (Several EDU courses do not require textbooks.)
Course Fees: $40.00 online course fee
Other: $65.00 In EDU 1010, students are required to complete a teacher licensure background check.

Estimated Time to Completion
Time to completion is 4 semesters based on a full-time minimum of 16 credits per semester. Less than 16 credits per semester will increase time to completion.

Licensure Information
The Education AS program alone does not lead to professional licensure. This program prepares students for application and transfer to other programs of study that could eventually lead to professional licensure.  Professional licensure requirements vary from state-to-state. It is highly recommended that students consult in advance with the Utah State Board of Education, or similar agencies in other states, to find out more about eligibility for educational licensure. If you have difficulty finding the licensure requirements for your state or intended profession, please contact your academic advisor or SLCC’s state authorization coordinator for help.

Advising Notes

Admission into a major program at a transfer institution depends upon the receiving institution’s requirements for that major. Some major programs are restricted and require special application as well as a competitive GPA. See the Education Academic Advisor at both SLCC and the intended receiving institution for specific articulation information.
