Program Description: The Web Graphic Design Certificate of Proficiency is a 28-credit program designed to prepare students to design websites from concept to completion and includes coursework in basic design principles, website architecture, graphic design, web animation, audio and video production, and website promotion. Students will prepare a portfolio of websites they can use to demonstrate their skills to potential employers. This program was created as part of SLCC’s $2.7 million Community-Based Job Training (CBJT) grant from the Department of Labor.

Career Opportunities: Upon completion of program, students will qualify for work as assistants or junior web designers.

Program Entry Requirements: Grant project participants will be tested by the Department of Workforce Services (DWS) and Salt Lake Community College (SLCC).

Estimated Cost for Students: Approximately $2932 in tuition, plus student fees and approximately $500 in books, storage devices and supplies. Students will need access to computer systems.

Note: This Certificate of Proficiency is not eligible for financial aid. However, courses within the certificate may be eligible if taken as part of a financial aid eligible program. Please check with the Financial Aid Office to determine if your classes are eligible.

Estimated Time to Completion: If students follow the suggested semester schedule, time to completion is two semesters.

Students will be able to design and create complete information architecture of a website to industry standards while demonstrating substantive field knowledge, critical thinking and effective communication. 1, 4, 5
Students will demonstrate competencies to design and create web site assets, such as buttons, illustrations, images, video, and sound, and so on in appropriate formats using industry standard coding and appropriate software. 1, 4
Students will be able to incorporate visual communication design principles including color theory, typography, and layout into websites. 1, 4, 5
Students will be able to create a complete website with a minimum of 25 web pages. The site will have a consistent, appropriate image with all assets compressed appropriately and functional. The site effectiveness will be evaluated by both peer teams and the instructor. 1, 4, 5
