Program Description:
The Clinical Medical Assisting Program, a non-credit training program, will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to competently perform the duties of a medical assistant as defined by local and national standards. Medical assistants are trained primarily to work in doctors’ offices and other ambulatory care clinics as an integral member of the allied health care delivery team.
Students will be trained in both the administrative and clinical areas of medical assisting so that they may work to keep the offices and clinics of numerous health professionals running smoothly. The curriculum will allow the students to gain competency in cognitive, psychomotor and affective competencies. The program will be offered in a flexible open entry / open exit format.
Instruction will be achieved with a combination of classroom, laboratory, and clinical activities that will include experience in an ambulatory healthcare facility. Students must demonstrate proficiency by passing all courses and competencies required in the program before being placed in a clinical site for the externship. Students complete a 165 hour unpaid clinical externship at a health care facility contracted with the college. Students are required to provide the externship coordinator of the Applied Technology division of the School of Applied Technology and Professional Development, evidence of completion of these hours and satisfactory performance signed by the clinical supervisor.
Upon successful completion of the coursework and externship at a satisfactory rate of 80% or better and receipt of all necessary documentation the student will receive the Certificate of Completion.
