Program Description: The Psychology department offers individual courses in psychology, as well as a two-year AS degree. Listed below is the recommended course of study for the AS degree.

Transfer/Articulation Information: Admission into a major program at a transfer institution depends upon the receiving institution’s requirements for that major. Some major programs are restricted and require special application as well as a competitive GPA. See an Academic Advisor at both SLCC and the intended receiving institution for specific articulation information.

Estimated Cost for Students: Tuition and books based on the number of credit hours each semester.

Estimated Time to Completion: If students follow the suggested sample schedule, completion time is four semesters.

1. Theory and Content of Psychology. Students will demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology. 1
2. Communication Skills. Students will be able to communicate effectively in a variety of formats. 2
3. Research Methods in Psychology. Students will understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis, and interpretation. 3
4. Critical Thinking Skills in Psychology. Students will gain experience in critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and, when possible, the scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes. 4
5. Civic Engagement. Students will develop the following skills and knowledge to by civically engaged and /or to work with others in a professional and constructive manner. 5

Students may use PSY 1010 /PSY 1100  to fill a Major Course Requirement or a General Education Distribution Area in Social Science, but not both.

It is the student’s responsibility to examine each course description for details of prerequisite classes. Those prerequisites must be satisfied before the designated class may be taken. Students who need to take preparatory classes to meet the requirements of first semester courses should plan on extra time to complete the program.
