Program Description
The Music Department offers a two-year program of music education for students planning to major in music at a four-year institution, as well as the student who is interested in improving their individual musical knowledge and abilities.
Departmental offerings include music theory, conducting, MIDI technology (computer/synthesizer), songwriting, music history and music appreciation. The Department also offers opportunities to develop individual music skills in a variety of instruments, piano and voice, as well as performing experience in auditioned and non-auditioned ensembles. The Music Department faculty supports high standards in music education; they encourage and mentor individual students to attain their highest potential.
Career Opportunities
Continuation to baccalaureate granting institutions in performance and music education. Students may also open studios in private music teaching and approach local recording studios for recording work. Performers may also engage in performance for pay as an entrepreneur in the music field. Most performing musicians do not hold regular jobs as performers but work as contract entrepreneurs in the communities.
Transfer/Articulation Information
Music majors planning to transfer to a four-year institution will be required to pass a vocal or instrumental proficiency exam. It is strongly encouraged that students take 45-minute private lessons each semester in voice or their instrument of study to prepare for this exam.
Admission into a major program at a transfer institution depends upon the receiving institution’s requirements for that major. Some major programs are restricted and require special application as well as a competitive GPA. See an Academic Advisor at both SLCC and the intended receiving institution for specific articulation information.
Program Entry Requirements
By Audition or faculty approval. Students with insufficient prior preparation may be required to take MUSC 1100 Intro to Music Theory before being allowed to begin taking the required courses in Music Theory. Students with insufficient piano/keyboard skills may be required to take MUSC 1150 and MUSC 1160 or private piano lessons to complete the piano proficiency requirement. Total Program/Course Fees
Estimated books and supplies- $375-$500 per semester, $10.00 for performing classes for music, $280-$405 per semester for private lessons (voice or instrumental).
Estimated Cost for Students
Cost of supplies and texts are comparable with other General Education classes at approximately $100 per text. Some courses require additional fees or may require concert attendance.
Estimated Time to Completion
If students follow the suggested schedule, time to completion is four semesters.
