Program Description
The Interior Design program is designed to develop technical skills, creativity, and an understanding of all aspects of Interior Design. The graduates of this program will be qualified by education, experience, and examination to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces for the purpose of improving the quality of life, increasing productivity, and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public. The Interior Design program will prepare the students to:

  • analyze client’s needs, goals, and life safety requirements
  • integrate findings with knowledge of interior design
  • formulate preliminary design concepts that are aesthetic, appropriate, and functional, and in accordance with codes and standards
  • develop and present final design recommendations through appropriate presentation media
  • prepare working drawings and specifications for non-load bearing interior construction, reflected ceiling plans, lighting, interior detailing, materials, finishes, space planning, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment in compliance with universal accessibility guidelines and all applicable codes
  • collaborate with professional services of other licensed practitioners in the technical areas of, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and load-bearing design as required for regulatory approval
  • prepare and administer bids and contract documents as the client’s agent
  • review and evaluate design solutions during implementation and upon completion

(Projects cover a wide range of interior spaces, including residences, hotels and restaurants, stores, historic settings, and supportive housing).

This AAS degree also provides educational credits needed to qualify for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam (NCIDQ).

Completion of this program leads to an Associate in Applied Science degree.

This program can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.

Career Opportunities
Graduates of this program will have the skill and knowledge to work as:

  • Design assistants for independent designer or Design firms (residential & commercial)
  • Drafts-persons in architectural firms
  • Home Stagers
  • Freelance Designers
  • Sales/ Design in any interior related industries e.g. lighting, furniture, flooring, window treatments, cabinetry, etc.
  • Kitchen & bath designers
  • Manufacturing Representatives
  • Decorators

Transfer/Articulation Information
This AAS Degree is currently not transferable to four-year institutions; however, some of the General Education components are transferable. The Interior Design Program is committed to general and pre-professional programs and some credit may be granted by receiving institutions on a per case basis (See Utah System of Higher Education Institutions).

Estimated Cost for Students
Approximately $6,500 in tuition, $1,000 in books and supplies.

Estimated Time to Completion
If students follow the suggested semester schedule, time to completion is five semesters.

- Visually and volumetrically approach to design problems. Solving problems creatively and logically based on industry standards.

- Measuring and estimating the quantity and cost of materials needed for each projects, e.g. paint, drapery, floor coverings, wallpaper, etc.
- Space planning, read blue prints, use colors effectively, and specify the use of architectural materials and elements based on industry standards.

- Communicating effectively by developing critical reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
- Organizing and presenting ideas and information verbally and in writing, in individual and group settings.

-Production of quality presentations using hand drafting skills, lettering, an computer-aided design drafting skills, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Sketchup, QuickBooks and ProKitchen software.

- Substantive knowledge of business practices for employment in the Interior Design Industry.

- Proper industry terminology that allows them to communicate effectively with other similarly engaged professionals. They will listen effectively and express their ideas clearly.

- Choose and direct the installation of appropriate materials for interior projects.
