Program Description
The Education Program is a two-year program designed to prepare students to transfer to an accredited four-year teacher licensure program. Students completing the program will develop skills and receive the academic and hands-on experiences necessary to be accepted into the professional core of courses offered at the university level.

Specific requirements leading to a bachelor’s degree in education differ among the four-year higher education institutions. To tailor a program specific to student needs, students must meet with the Education Academic Advisor prior to registering for courses.

Students should select electives based on the institution to which they intend to transfer. Electives may be selected with approval from the EDU Academic Advisor or the EDU Associate Dean. Students should consult with the Education Academic Advisor to ensure that the correct classes are taken for transferability to their school of choice. Guidelines (advising forms) for transfer to other Education programs in Utah are available from the EDU Academic Advisor.  Please note that the Education electives are subject to change, so it is important that all students meet with an Advisor before enrolling for classes. Students are also advised to contact the Education Advisor at the school(s) to which they intend to transfer for the most current information.

Licensure Information
The Education AS program alone does not lead to professional licensure. This program prepares students for application and transfer to other programs of study that could eventually lead to professional licensure.  Professional licensure requirements vary from state-to-state. Program General Education Notes


REQUIRED:

Quantitative Literacy (QL): MATH 1050 or  MATH 2000
It is recommended that Elementary majors take MATH 2000

American Institutions (AI): HIST 2700 and HIST 2710 are required for secondary education history majors.

Social Science (SS): Any approved Social Science (SS) course except PSY 1100 or FHS 1500.
It is highly recommended to take an ETHS (SS) course.

**Only one ETHS course will count towards the 21 elective credits. Do not take more than one ETHS course.

  • Education AS: Full-time  
  • Time to completion is 4 semesters based on a full-time minimum of 16 credits per semester. Less than 16 credits per semester will increase time to completion.

  • Demonstrate skills to communicate orally and in writing about key concepts and significant topics in education.   • Demonstrate how to use and interpret data, graphs, and tables to analyze relevant information for working with students in a classroom setting. Explain various ways to interpret mathematical concepts as they pertain to assessing learning to enhance teaching and clarify data for parents. [1,3,6]
  • Construct a personal philosophy of education. Systematically complete reflective assignments demonstrating analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. [1,2,4,5]
  • Successfully complete service learning and field experience in predetermined local elementary and secondary schools. [6,7]
