Program Description
Anthropology is the study of human and nonhuman primates. Anthropology is distinguished from other disciplines by its emphasis on a holistic, interdisciplinary, comparative, and evolutionary approaches to the study of humans and their relatives. Anthropology subfields include cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology, and anthropologists consider past and present culture, language, and biology essential for a complete understanding of humankind. The Anthropology Department provides a wide variety of courses that range from general surveys to specialized topics as well as internships and a field school. The program goes beyond an emphasis on coverage and content; it is designed to teach students to think critically and communicate effectively. Additionally, most core course requirements carry the General Education designation. This means that this program is also a vehicle for students to broaden their perspectives and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

  • Anthropology AS: Full-time  
  • Time to completion is four semesters based on a full-time minimum of 15 credits per semester. Less than 15 credits per semester will increase time to completion.

  • Students will demonstrate that they understand and can apply the theories and methods used by anthropologists (e.g. the holistic approach, fieldwork, the scientific method, etc.) [1,3,4,8]
  • Students will demonstrate that they understand cultural diversity and can communicate about cultures using cultural relativity. They will employ ethnographic research methods in the community and interpret data. [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9]
  • Students will demonstrate that they understand and can communicate about archaeological methods and techniques and how archaeologists interpret cultural remains and data to reconstruct past life-ways. [1,2,3,4,7,8]
  • Students will demonstrate that they understand and can interpret the biological variation of past and present humans and their closest relatives, as well as evolutionary theories and processes. They will effectively communicate their understanding of the evidence for human evolution. [1,2,3,4,7,8]
  • Students will have the skill to post a signature assignment and reflection on an electronic portfolio; use scholarly publications in their research with regard to the writing; use credible sources in their work and properly cite them, analyze empirical data, make observations, and generate and test hypotheses; and compare, contrast, interpret, and weigh multiple disparate lines of evidence and points of view.
