Program Description
The Film Production Technician program provides students with the specialized knowledge required to perform a wide variety of tasks encountered in the professional world of film and video production.
Students master skills required to be competitive for technical positions in Utah’s local film industry. Such skills will include the interpretation of industry technical terms and functions, the operation of motion picture camera equipment, and understanding grip & electrical work on a soundstage, scene composition, lighting, and audio. Students will learn the pre-production, production, and post-production processes.
Students may train for various film industry positions such as camera operator, camera assistant, audio mixer/recordist, 1st assistant director, grip, lighting designer assistant, sound designer, video/film editor, colorist.
The Salt Lake Community College program involves students with full-time faculty as well as expert film industry professionals who teach courses within their areas of expertise. The local film industry is highly supportive of efforts to train people in these areas and will provide internship opportunities for SLCC students.
Career Opportunities
Work in this profession is often fast paced, emotionally & physically demanding, and often involves long hours. Students will need to establish their reputations within the corporate and commercial film industry and salaries vary widely depending on the type of work performed and the level of experience required. Many students find work in the Utah film industry. A handful of students will move out-of-state to find employment in L.A. as well as other locations steeped in film and commercial production.
Transfer/Articulation Information
This AAS degree is currently transferable to Utah State University for a BFA in film production. The General Education components are transferable to most other 4-year higher education institutions.
