Program Description
This degree is designed for students who are interested in a variety of non-clinical health-related careers. This program will provide students with a solid foundational understanding of the healthcare system and professions within that system. Students completing this program will have the opportunity for direct transfer for baccalaureate degrees in fields such as Public Health, Community Health, Health Administration. This degree may also be used in conjunction with a licensing or certificate program to enhance the students understanding of the healthcare system in general and provide basic leadership training.

Career Opportunities
An EMSI Data Set run on career posting in related fields, specifically Medical and Health Services Managers, Health Educators and Community Health Workers show a current need for this type of training in our area with a median reported salary in Northern Utah of $60.9K. Although some of these jobs were for associate level training (10%), most were requiring bachelor level training (61%). The remainder needed Master or PhD level training, which the BS transfer degree will provide background for this level training if a student wishes to pursue it.

Although the intent is for this to be a transfer degree, with clear articulation agreements in place before enrolling students, without transfer there are still job opportunities for students including:

  1. Community Health Worker
  2. Health Unit Coordinator
  3. Healthcare Administrative Assistant

EN: ENGL 2010 Intermediate Writing (EN)  is recommended. ENGL 2100 Technical Writing (EN)  is also accepted. 

SS: One of 4 classes will be accepted; different transfer institutions have different requirements for prerequisites here. Please see specific advising notes for each articulation pathway to determine the appropriate class to take.

LS: BIOL 1610 College Biology I (LS)  and BIOL 1615 College Biology I Lab  are required.

PS: CHEM 1110 Elementary Chemistry  is strongly recommended as it serves as a pre-requisite to BIOL 2420 Human Physiology .  However, CHEM 1210 General Chemistry I  and CHEM 1215 General Chemistry Lab I  will also be accepted for transfer. 4 credits in CHEM are required for transfer.

All other general studies are student choice.

Students may take either HLTH 1500 Lifetime Wellness/Fitness  or ACCT 2010 Survey of Financial Accounting . The choice may impact the transfer options. Please see advising notes for each articulation program when determining the correct course to take.

Students completing the CHL program with the courses listed qualify to complete articulation to Weber State University into either the BS in Public Health program, or the BS in Healthcare Administration program.  

  • These programs are available with options for both in person leaning, or online learning.  
  • Students will enter the chosen program with all general education requirements and pre-requisite courses met.
  • Students will have 3 credits waived from the required program electives (3 credits).
  • Students graduating from the CHL program will not be required to take HS 3000 The Healthcare System (3 credits) at Weber State University.
  • Students will need to meet minimum requirements for upper division course credits, with the elective and HS 3000 being waived for CHL graduates’ students may need to take additional upper division course work. A minor is strongly encouraged. Students should meet with a Weber State University Advisor to evaluate credits and make recommendations for an appropriate minor.

  • Preferred PSY 1010 General Psychology (SS)  
  • Other SS classes may be accepted but will require a request for substitution after the student has transferred. It is strongly recommended PSY 1010 General Psychology (SS)  be taken. 
  • Although other SS classes are allowed for graduation for the degree, one of these classes must be included for articulation to Weber State University Bachelor of Public Health or Bachler of Health Administration degrees
