Program Description
The Medical Scribe Program, a Competency Based Education training program, will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to competently perform the duties of a medical scribe as defined by local and national standards. Medical Scribe employees are trained primarily to work in doctors’ offices and other ambulatory care clinics, or inpatient facilities as an integral member of the allied health care delivery team to assist in real-time clinical documentation. The Medical Scribe collects information gathered at point-of-care under the direction of a licensed provider, and inputs data to create and maintain comprehensive and accurate electronic health records for the benefit of clinicians, healthcare staff, and patients.

The program will be offered in a flexible open entry / open exit format. Students will be trained in areas necessary for medical scribes including CPR and First Aid, anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. The curriculum will allow the students to gain competency in cognitive, psychomotor and affective competencies.

Instruction will be achieved with a combination of online, classroom and clinical activities that will include experience in a healthcare facility. Students must demonstrate proficiency by passing all courses and competencies required in the program before being placed in a clinical site for the externship. As a final program training component, students will complete an 80 hour unpaid clinical externship at a health care facility contracted with the college.

Upon successful completion of the coursework and externship at a satisfactory rate of 80% or better and receipt of all necessary documentation the student will receive the Certificate of Achievement.
