Program Description

Define your photographic future at SLCC. Acquire essential visual communication through exceptional composition, light, and technology through the art of making imagery.

Photography is the visual engine for storytelling and is essential to all aspects of visual media, art, design, cinema, and video. Students who elect to pursue the Photography Emphasis will cultivate significant expertise with digital camera operation and digital workflow, combined with vital analog film components, to produce inspiring color and black & white imagery. Learn innovative studio & existing lighting technique, contemporary business practices intermixed with essential photo history, creative theory, and problem solving. Completing an AAS Degree in Photography will prepare students for a photography related career path in the creative media workforce, or as a freelance photographer, or continue education for an advanced art degree.

Upon completion of the Visual Art & Design - Photography Emphasis AAS degree, graduates will be able to ensure proficiency with both aesthetic and technical confidence in the visual vocabulary of photography. Graduates demonstrate excellence in image-making techniques across analog and digital media platforms, integrating light as the essence of photography. Individual style is cultivated through curriculum grounded in inquiry, practice, and process, thereby becoming aware of one’s own creative potential. Graduates exhibit awareness and competency in self-promotion, marketing, and the business of photography with ability to problem solve creatively in a wide variety of situations.

Career Opportunities
Industry demand for imagery is extremely high and supports photographers and videographers who can drive the marketplace forward. Photography is the visual engine for storytelling and is widely utilized across diverse businesses. Photographers provide analog and digitally produced imagery appropriate for use in advertising, architecture, aerial (drone), automotive, catalog, concerts, events, editorial, fashion, fine art, portraits, people, stock, sports, real-estate, and travel. Photographers often work entrepreneurial as freelance, or in-house for a business corporation, or digital technician, or digital image specialist, or image editor, or salesperson, and are attainable upon completion of an AAS degree. SLCC’s longtime relationship with the media industry supports a strong and diverse network of accomplished alumni.

Transfer/Articulation Information
SLCC has partnered to create a program articulation for students wishing to continue their studies in photography. Students who successfully complete the Photography AAS degree will be accepted into the photography programs in the following schools:

  • Academy of Art University
  • University of Utah
  • Weber State University
  • Utah Valley University

Students interested in transferring should consult with Photography faculty to ensure adequate progress is being made toward completion.

Program Entry Requirements
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Recommended: Artistic and technical aptitude, familiarity with computers.

All students interested in majoring in photography must have their own 35mm, digital SLR camera and/or medium format camera with full manual capabilities.
