Program Description
The Interior Design program is structured to prepare students for entry into the varied professions within the field of interior design. Students will earn how to identify, research, and creatively solve problems related to the quality of interior environments. Interior Designers provide specialized services for planning both commercial and residential spaces. In addition, student will learn drafting techniques and how to use computer-aided design tools which will help them present their work to clients. Student will also gain an understanding of the legal and ethical issues that guide and direct the profession.

Career Opportunities
Students who successfully complete the program will be able to provide experienced planning services that include: design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, specialized knowledge of interior construction, building codes, equipment, materials and furnishing.

Transfer/Articulation Information
The courses included in this Certificate of Proficiency directly transfer to Weber State University’s Interior Design Program towards a Bachelor of Science Degree. Weber State requires general education requirements which can be completed at Salt Lake Community College or Weber State University.

  • Interior Design CP: Full-time  
  • Time to completion is 2 semesters based on a full-time minimum of 12 credits per semester. Less than 12 credits per semester will increase time to completion.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and evaluate theories of design (space, line, mass, shape, texture, scale, proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis, harmony and variety) and their applications. [1,2,4,5]
  • Evaluate and solve design problems visually and volumetrically to create functional and creative spaces through conceptualizing, diagramming, space planning and completing construction documents. [1,2,3,4,5,7]
  • Measure and estimate the quantity and cost of materials needed for projects, i.e. paint, drapery, floor coverings, wallpaper, etc. [1,3,4,7]
  • Evaluate and specify textiles and materials for interiors regarding appropriate use and impact on the environment. [1,2,4,6,7,8]
  • Demonstrate proficiency in creating industry standard presentations using hand and computer aided drafting skills. [1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9]
  • Demonstrate the proper use of industry terminology which will allow them to communicate effectively with other similarly engaged professionals. [1,2,7]
