Program Description
This program is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to care for patients safely and to meet the State of Utah Nursing Assistant certification requirements. Students completing the program will learn to provide for the physical, physiological, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient within a hospital or long-term care facility. The curriculum includes an overall introduction to human relations, anatomy, physiology, as well as, consideration of body mechanics, disease processes, and therapeutic approaches. Skills will be practiced in a “patient’s room”, which is equipped with a hospital bed, a mannequin “patient” and all required equipment and supplies needed for each skill. Students will also gain valuable knowledge and hands-on experience by participating in long-term care and hospital clinicals.
At the end of the completed program, students will:
- Be CPR certified
- Be HIPAA certified
- Have 18 hours of Acute Care training in a hospital environment
- Have 24 hours of Long-term care training
- Be current with their required immunizations
Career Opportunities
Upon program completion, the student will become eligible to be certified and licensed as a CNA and will be able to obtain employment in the health care field as a CNA. The student will also satisfy the prerequisite of completing a CNA program prior to applying for a Nursing program.

Transfer/Articulation Information
The CNA program articulates with the requirements of Salt Lake Community College, the University of Utah, Weber State University, BYU, Westminster, and Davis Applied Technology Center prerequisites for enrollment in their nursing degree programs.

Immunizations
- Hepatitis B Series, three vaccinations or titer
- MMR, two vaccinations or titer
- Two-step PPD – Tuberculosis (TB) Manitou Test or Chest X-Ray within one year. Needs two separate PPD tests performed
- Varicella (Chickenpox), two vaccinations or titer
- TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) within past 10 years
- Influenza (October 1 - March 31)

Our program is accredited through the Utah Nurse Assistant Registry.
Licensure Information
Graduation from the Certified Nursing Assistant program does not guarantee the ability to obtain a Utah state license to practice as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Licensure is the exclusive right and responsibility of each state. In order to practice as a Certified Nursing Assistant, students must satisfy individual state requirements, independent of SLCC graduation requirements. It is highly recommended that students consult in advance with the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR), or similar agencies in other states, to find out more about eligibility for licensure.
