Program Description
Family and Human Studies students will be prepared to work with families and children within the field of early care and education as teachers and/or directors.

This introductory level program will acquaint students to the multi-faceted, multi-skilled early childhood profession. Students examine issues in the provision of services to children birth through age eight in a child care or elementary setting. The program may require Community-Engaged Learning and lab school participation where the student is assigned to work with seasoned professionals in the field enabling each to apply and further understand theoretical frameworks discussed in class.

The two-year AAS degree in Family and Human Studies prepares the student to become a teacher or director of a child care facility. Special attention is given to providing the student the business skills needed to become an effective child care center administrator.

Career Opportunities
Students specializing in early childhood will be prepared to work with children in family child care or child care centers as teachers and/or directors.

Program Entry Requirements
Students in the FHS program must not have been convicted of any crimes against children and will be required to complete a criminal background check. Students should also exhibit the maturity and emotional stability required to take charge of a group of pre-school children and possess sufficient health and strength to lift a child.

Licensure Information
The Family and Human Studies program alone does not lead to professional licensure in the State of Utah. Professional licensure requirements vary from state-to-state. Note

FHS 0010 & FHS 0011 are two hour per week labs. FHS 2620 will require 2-two hour per week labs (4 hrs per week total). FHS 2800 is spent 3 days a week, 3 hrs per day at the Eccles Lab School or at various other specified sites off campus.

Develop knowledge, skills, and experience to work effectively with young children based on industry standards. Be prepared for further study in education or a related discipline. Understand key concepts, events and personalities related to early childhood education. Explain theories, concepts and principles connected to the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development of children. Evaluate and prepare curriculum and program activities consistent with current research on early childhood learning theory and models. Incorporates core knowledge content in a classroom setting. Acquire knowledge to administer a child care facility including development of a viable business plan, policy and procedures manual. [1]
Effectively communicate orally and in writing about key concepts and significant topics in early childhood education. Develop effective communication skills for business and educational settings. Maintain appropriate state and Federally required documentation. Demonstrates effective nonverbal communication techniques with young children. Demonstrates effective verbal and nonverbal techniques of working with parents from socially and culturally diverse backgrounds. Develop a business plan including a policy and procedures manual for a child care facility or preschool. Develop skills needed to present a communication-based parent program. [2]
Use and interpret information represented as data, graphs, and tables to analyze relevant information for working with children in an early childhood setting. Demonstrate knowledge of working budgets by developing a viable budget for a child care center or preschool. Develop a business plan including an operating budget. [3]
Construct a personal philosophy of early childhood education and care. Systematically complete reflective assignments demonstrating analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Connect the discipline of early childhood education with other disciplines relevant to child development and learning. [4,5]
Successfully complete service learning and laboratory experiences in predetermined early childhood learning environments. Dialogue with seasoned professionals in the field to enhance theoretical perspectives. Demonstrate appropriate social and interpersonal relationship skills in a variety of early childhood professional contexts. [6]
