Program Description
This program is designed to train students in diesel systems technology. Technicians in this field repair and maintain diesel equipment, such as trucks, buses, construction and mining equipment. This includes bulldozers, earth movers, cranes and other diesel-power equipment. Diesel technicians use testing equipment like dynamometers, which measure engine power. Computer based diagnostic equipment is also used to assist in diagnoses of engines, transmissions, and other vehicle based systems. This intensive program also prepares students for an entry-level truck driving position as a Class “A” CDL driver.

According to http://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/diesel-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm diesel mechanics have a 2012 Median Pay of $42,320 per year. The job outlook for diesel service technicians and mechanics is projected to grow 9 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Job opportunities should be best for those who have completed postsecondary training in diesel engine repair.

Student must have basic math and reading skills according to TABE

In addition, the KPDR 0510 Professional Truck Driving course has the following specific requirements:

CDL Learners Permit (Class A)
Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) w/ no DUI’s within past two years
DOT medical card
Drug Test (at SLCC approved collection center)
Lab Fee of $1,950.00 that helps cover cost of required driving expenses

A prospective diesel technician should be in good physical condition and have above-average mechanical ability and eye-hand coordination.

Students are not required to have their own tools for this program, but students can buy their own tools through various vendors for a substantial discount. The cost of a basic set of tools for diesel mechanics can be as high as $3600.00. Most employers require mechanics to have their own tools. See your instructor for more information.
