Program Description
The Biology Department offers a program leading to an associate of science degree in Pre-Health Sciences. The required courses in this program will give a student an excellent and broad foundation on which to further their studies in Health Sciences AND will meet many Health Science program admission requirements.

Transfer/Articulation Information
Students completing the AS degree in Pre-Health Science at SLCC are well prepared to apply to Health Sciences certification programs and to transfer to any of the four year institutions in the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE).  This program also prepares students to transfer to public institutions in other states as well as most private colleges and universities.

Program Entry Requirements
Preparation Note: Students who need to take preparatory classes to meet the requirements of first semester courses should plan on extra time to complete the program. The semesters during which courses are taught are listed below. Students should check the semester class schedule for day/evening availability, locations and modifications caused by varying enrollment.  Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their Program Advisor to plan their course schedules and course taking pathway.

Advising Notes:


It is strongly recommended that students meet with an advisor during their first semester to plan the appropriate pathway for the ultimate goal that they would like to achieve.  Students aspiring to obtain a BS or higher in biology, should obtain the AS in BIOLOGY degree rather than this AS in pre-Health Sciences degree.  Prospective pre-professional (e.g. pre-medicine, pre-veterinarian, pre-pharmacy, pre-OTD, pre-MOT etc.) students choosing to earn an AS in Pre-Health Sciences should take the highest MATH, CHEMISTRY, and PHYSICS classes offered.  Students who need to take preparatory classes to meet the requirements of first semester courses should plan on extra time to complete the program.

Students also earning an AAS in any allied health field should consult with financial aid to determine how earning an additional degree may affect their aid eligibility.

Additional Program Notes:


1 ENGL 2100  is the preferred writing course and COMM 1010  or COMM 1020  are the preferred IN courses for most programs to which a student might transfer.

2 Appropriate math placement should be considered given that some programs may require a higher level Math than MATH 1040 .  Students should consult with a Program Advisor for best fit.

3 Students should consult the list of pre-requisite courses for the program they are interested in (1) before selecting  Social Science (SS) and Intensive (IN) distribution courses and (2) before selecting electives.  Some programs require BIOL 2420  (Human physiology) while others require  BIOL 2060  (Microbiology)

4 Students must choose whether to use the CHEM 1110  and CHEM 1120  (one year of chemistry) pathway or the CHEM 1210 , CHEM 1220 , CHEM 2320 , CHEM 2325  (two years of chemistry plus a semester of biochemistry after transfer to a 4-year institution) pathway.  The two-year pathway opens up more options.  The suggested schedules above reflect these choices.

5 BIOL 2420  (Human Physiology) is required by many but not all health science programs. BIOL 2020  (Cell Biology) AND BIOL 2030  (Genetics) are accepted by the University of Utah.  BIOL 2060  (Microbiology) and BIOL 2420  (Human Physiology)  are  pre-requisites for the University of Utah’s BSN program.

6 HLTH 1050  (Life, Society, and Drugs) and HLTH 1500  (Lifetime Wellness/Fitness) are required for the USU BS degree (Health Education and Promotion: Health Science Emphasis)
