This program is designed to prepare students for future employment in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration (HVACR) industry. The program consists of 6 major sections with required core training courses and elective courses designed to allow students to determine which area of the HVACR industry they would like to specialize in. Throughout the training students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate, thereby certifying, their skills by participating in nationally recognized tests which provide “Employment Ready” certifications. “Employment Ready” certifications confirm the student’s grasp of the critical skills needed for entry level technicians in the HVACR industry. The following is a general overview of the program.
- Occupational Safety. The 10 hour course provides safety training as applied to the HVACR industry.
- Customer Service Soft Skills. Developing good customer service skills is just as important if not more important than developing technical skills.
- Electrical training specific to the HVAC industry. Theory and Lab exercises provide essential building code and troubleshooting training.
- Service of multiple types of heating equipment is introduced with emphasis on combustion equipment safety, and maximizing operating efficiency. Training includes meeting the requirements to complete the Rocky Mountain Gas Assoc. (RMGA), Carbon Monoxide Safety Assoc. (COSA), and HVAC Excellence (ESCO) “Employment Ready” 3rd party certifications.
- Refrigeration theory and lab exercises on the basic fundamentals of residential and commercial equipment service. Core training includes EPA 608 (CFC certification) and R410A Certification which are industry required certifications to use these refrigerants. “Employment Ready” certifications confirm the student’s understanding of core fundamentals and chosen elective options, designed to fit the specific training needs of the students.
- Commercial Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Lab exercises designed to introduce the student to some of the types of equipment found in the commercial service industry.
- Students will choose a final elective course and either participate in an externship working in a supervised environment with a local employer, work on a capstone project under the direction of the instructor, or complete training in commercial heating and refrigeration.
The following certifications are available to students. None of these certifications are required to pass this program, but are recommended.
- Rocky Mountain Gas Association (RMGA): Combustion Gas (RMGA) Certification (This certification is required to work on gas fired equipment in Utah in the field.)
- ESCO Institute -HVAC Excellence “Employment Ready” Certifications (ERC) (optional depending on electives)

- EPA 608 (Chloro-Floro-Carbon - CFC) Refrigerant Certification thru ESCO Institute (This certification is required to buy refrigerants and to work on equipment containing refrigerants in the field.)
- Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Safety Coalition (AC&R) thru ESCO Institute: R410A Refrigerant Safety (AC&R) Certification (optional)

- HVAC Excellence Association “Employment Ready” Certifications: 3rd party certification of various aspects of HVAC service that recognizes basic understanding of trade fundamentals.

|Students will obtain training related jobs. The various certificates earned in this program should provide a positive influence to their hiring potential by employers.
|Students will be able to apply their training toward completion of an apprenticeship or AAS degree through their continuation in the consecutive SLCC programs.
|Students will learn skills associated with improving energy and environmental efficiencies that the students will find beneficial for their career opportunities.
