Program Description
The History program is designed to expose students to a variety of history fields and to the methods used by historians. Students who complete the program will be well prepared to undertake upper division history courses or complete a four-year degree. Students should check with the department or Academic Advisor to determine which courses are transferable to other colleges within the Utah System of Higher Education.

Career Opportunities
Teaching history on the secondary and higher education levels; research for governmental agencies, private firms, and NGOs; archival, curating and museum work, etc.

Transfer/Articulation Information
Admission into a major program at a transfer institution depends upon the receiving institution’s requirements for that major. Some major programs are restricted and require special application as well as a competitive GPA. See an Academic Advisor at both SLCC and the intended receiving institution for specific articulation information.

Estimated Time to Completion
If students follow the suggestion schedule of classes, completion time is four semesters.

Students will:
a) acquire substantive knowledge of the major social, political, and economic themes in a variety of history fields;
b) understand the ways in which the study of the past informs the present;
c) understand the methodologies historians utilize;
d) be able to identify major schools of thought.

Students will speak and write analytically, comparatively, and persuasively about historical themes, interpretations, arguments and ideas in a skilled and respectful manner. 2 - Communicate Effectively
Students will be able to:
a) gather, identify, differentiate and analyze data from both primary and secondary historical sources;
b) interrogate and contextualize sources;
c) evaluate contested interpretations;
d) use evidence to create narrative;
e) revise narrative in the light of new findings.

Students who want to earn a BA degree after transfer from SLCC are advised to take a language that the chosen school offers as upper-division to meet the BA language requirement. Not all colleges and universities offer all languages; consult with the chosen school’s language department.

To register for HIST 1700  you must take and pass RDG 0990  with a C or better or have appropriate placement, ACT or SAT reading score.
