Anthropology is the study of humanity. Anthropology is distinguished from other disciplines by its emphasis on a holistic approach to the study of human behavior. Anthropologists consider culture, history, language, and biology essential for a complete understanding of humankind. The History and Anthropology Department provides a wide variety of courses that range from general surveys to specialized topics. The program goes far beyond an emphasis on coverage and content; it is designed to teach students to think critically, and communicate effectively. Additionally, most core course requirements carry the General Education designation. This means that this program is also a vehicle for students to broaden their perspectives and deepen their understandings of the world around them.
Higher education, marketing, businesses (sensitivity training, international relations), medical field, public heath; human resource departments, museums, non-profits; Cultural Resource Management firms; private archaeological or preservation firms, state historical departments; national and state parks/monuments; BLM, military, cultural translation organizations, zoos; law enforcement, labs.
Students who complete the program will transfer more easily to other Anthropology Programs across the State of Utah. The following institutions offer BA and/or BS degrees in Anthropology: University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, and Weber State University. Students who complete the Anthropology AA at SLCC may satisfy pre-major courses for all of these programs.
